Frankfurt is the largest city in Hesse municipality - Germany, with a population of 670,000 people (2008) - the fifth largest city in Germany after Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne.
Situated along the River Main, with an area of 248.3 km2, Frankfurt is the financial and transportation center of Germany. The city is one of the leading financial centers in Europe, there are seats of the European Central Bank and the Frankfurt foreign bank. According to the Liverpool University Frankfurt is the richest city in the European Union.
Frankfurt is home to many of the tallest buildings in continental Europe. Because the cluster of skyscrapers at its center the city is sometimes called "Maynhatan" by analogy with the Manhattan district of New York, famous for its numerous skyscrapers. As of August 2009 in Frankfurt has 21 buildings with a height of 100 meters, in the process of planning are still 7. Most of them are office buildings, headquarters of banks and insurance companies. The highest building is the headquarters of Commerzbank - "Commerzbank Tower".
